Rookie K-Pop Groups without Korean members and what you should know about them

It is pretty common now to see the non-Korean members in K-Pop groups. The companies started including them so they can connect the fandoms and businesses in their home countries easily. Besides, it is pretty entertaining for fans to observe the multicultural groups’ chemistry due to the language and cultural barriers!

As the K-Pop groups are becoming more international, the two new interesting groups called Z-Girls and Z-Boys just had their debut in Korea. What makes them interesting, is that there isn’t a single Korean member participating in these groups. These groups are made up of seven members each and from different Asian countries including Japan, Taiwan, India, Indonesia, Philippines, Vietnam, and Thailand. Not only do they have no Korean members, but also their song lyrics are going to be in English instead of Korean.

?

Z-Boys ?No Limit?

Z-Girls ?What you waiting for?

Zenith Media Contents, the company that created these groups have stated that they want to bring the fans and talents from different Asian countries together to K-Pop community, to also nurture the stars that attract the global audience.

Since both Z-Girls and Z-Boys just had their debuts on February 23rd, there is not much information available about them yet. While the Korean community is not aware of them yet, the international fandoms have started following their journey. It seems that international fans are definitely more excited for these groups? appearance than Korean fans, as Koreans are still trying to understand their style, mission, and personalities.

?

When I tried to research within Korean online communities to see what their opinions are about these groups, I couldn?t find that many because not a lot of Korean people know about them yet. There were some comments under the discussion about these Z-Pop project groups. In Korean, they said,

?They sound legit. However, we have seen a lot of foreign project groups like this after K-Pop got bigger and none of them ever succeeded.? – ?????

?I?m not sure about this. But if they can sing and dance well, have good songs and choreography, have attractive members, can speak Korean well and do good on variety shows, they might succeed. If not, they probably won?t make it in Korea.?- ??

?Maybe they only debut in Korea and sing in English to go overseas to perform??- ???

?Last year around this time, there was a huge issue about some Japanese AV actress debuting as K-Pop group. After they debuted, no one ever heard of them. This year, we have Z-Pop kids. We are not sure until we hear their songs and get more information. ?- ????

1. What does “Blackpink” mean?
Their group name is more meaningful than just the combination of color. They used the color ‘pink’ to represent their beauty but also used ‘black’ to deny that that’s all there is. Therefore, the name “Blackpink” delivers the messages of “We are not just those pretty girls. We have more to show.”

2. How did they become popular?
Just like their group name represents, they are the complete package of singing and dancing talents, along with the visuals. As soon as they debuted, a lot of companies showed interests in hiring them for the commercials and photo shoots, etc. because of Blackpink’s trendy stylings, dark concepts, and amazing visuals. They were made of something that a lot of Korean fans have been waiting for: a powerful girl-power type of personality. Most of the time, Korean girl groups debut with cute, happy and upbeat feel of the performances and the songs. However, Blackpink inherited 2NE1‘s girl-power vibe and improved it by adding more sophisticated styling to their stage presence. Without a doubt, the record they made soon after their debut was truly remarkable with such strong and catchy songs, “Boombayah” and “Whistle”.

3. How are they different from other YG artists?
First of all, YG artists are known for including self-produced songs in their the albums. However, Blackpink hasn’t yet produced their own songs. Also, Blackpink is the first YG artist that has no assigned leader within the group. The purpose is to give equal responsibilities and voices to all four members, so they stay close and discuss decisions together.
Another fun fact! In the movie ?Justice League?, Blackpink?s ?As if it?s your last? music video was playing in the background in the scene where Batman met Flash for the first time!

Kakao Talk: The Must-have app for Koreans

If you follow K-pop stars or watch any Korean tv, you might have seen this yellow text boxes, with the notification sound that goes “ka-to!”
They are from the Korean messenger app called “Kakao Talk”, which is used by almost all Koreans as a communication tool on the phones and other devices. It is an app that allows users to send text messages, make calls and post to their stories like an Instagram. It is kind of necessary for Koreans to have Kakao Talk app because it is now used as the main platform for the announcements at work, meetings, group projects, K-pop fan chats, promotion and many more planning tools.

How did it get nationwide popular in Korea?

1. Free calls & messages

Kakao Talk service started as free calls & messages app just like ?Whatapp”. At first, there were a lot of conflicts with the call service providers in Korea because of the idea of “free service”. However, more Korean people started using Kakao Talk service as it was useful, convenient and free as long as they had internet service. Because a lot of people started using them as a communication tool, people who did not have Kakao Talk started getting the app in order to keep in touch with everyone else.

2. Connected with a lot of other services

Now that Kakao Talk is widely used in Korea, they are launching and connecting with more services such as banking, taxi, music apps, and many more. This makes it a whole lot easier for users to complete their tasks and explore other options all within Kakao app.

?

3. Most importantly, they are SO CUTE!

It might sound absolutely absurd, but one of the biggest reason why a lot of people use Kakao Talk service more than other platforms is because of their emoticons. Kakao Talk app has their own emoticons called “Kakao Talk Friends”, and they are the cutest emoticons with the most realistic personalities that represent various emotions. Watch this promotion video for KCON in LA, featuring Kakao Friends emoticons!

?

Because of these useful emoticons, it?s more fun to communicate through Kakao app than via normal text messages. Their emoticons are so popular that Kakao Talk now has several offline pop-up stores and cafes that sell stationary stuff with the emoticons on. It is almost impossible to not buy anything from this store!

Kakao talk messenger is definitely a great combination of convenience and enjoyable experience that Koreans adore. A lot of foreigners also started using Kakao app (for example, my friends who saw my Kakao Talk Friends dolls) but it seems that the company wants to focus on providing services within Korea before it expands more worldwide. It surely is a great tool that brings Korean communities closer.

Monthly” Idol? game: Rising gaming trend in Korea

“Why are my idols taking so much money? They wouldn’t have been able to debut if it wasn’t for me!” said K-Pop fans.
It might not make sense to hear this from fans. It?s more like something you?d heare from the CEO of K-Pop agencies. However, it seems that a lot of people are thinking this as they play this famous game called “Monthly Idol“, a mobile simulation game that’s becoming popular within K-Pop fandoms.
In this game, the users are the CEOs of the small startup entertainment agencies and their mission is to grow their business by creating successful idol groups.

?

comments from a monthly idol game

? For example!
This post is from K-Pop fan community. This fan posted and said ?My idols in Monthly Idol games have been active for 5 years, and now they have 42 mini albums. They worked like cows!? Other fans are laughing at her decision of avoiding making a full album that would?ve required to spend a lot of money away from her profit! Yes, this game is very realistic!

?

The interesting part is that every scenario in this game is very hyper-realistic. From casting the trainees to supporting them throughout their careers, the situations that happen here are probably something we all have seen from K-Pop industry. Dating scandals, planning for concerts, illness, disputes, and distributing the profits etc. are stuff that fans are very familiar with. Basically, users would have to spend their profit wisely whenever their idols get into troubles, so they can grow their business bigger. In order for users to gain profit, they need to schedule their idols to appear in as many shows and concerts as possible, just like in real life!

The ironic part is that those fans who have complained to their idols? companies for having extreme and unhealthy schedules, are now completely on the other side in this game. The reviews of this game are pretty hilarious, as the users confess that they have become the cruel and evil CEOs who treat their idols like their own products. A lot of the users complain about the fact that their idols take so much money from them, and that their idols keep getting into problems that need to be covered up with their expenses! As addictive as this game is, the users say that they have a better understanding of why CEOs make certain decisions for their idols and the company now.

?Watch this YouTube video of Ilhoon from BtoB playing Monthly Idol game! The video is bit long, but you can get a clear idea of how the game works, as Ilhoon himself is a first time player. Seeing how K-Pop artist himself slowly becoming a heartless CEO of his own company is totally worth the time!

What is ?Meok-Bang? : 3 Things you need to know

“Meok-Bang(??)” is a shortened word for “?? ??”, which means “eating broadcast” in Korean. Literally, it is the video broadcast contents that show the hosts eating food in front of cameras. Since it gets done live online, the hosts also interact with the viewers by answering their requests of eating certain stuff or in a certain way.

?

1. How did it start?

In Korea, Meok-Bang started gaining fame from the platform called “AfreekaTV”, which is a live video streaming service just like “Twitch”. The hosts would start the live streaming with the food to eat, and talk to viewers as they eat. On Afreeka TV, viewers would send the hosts the? star balloons’ which could get transferred into real money, as a way of supporting them to try more food! The hosts who had a lot of followers and viewers could also earn a lot of profit that way. Now, Meok-Bang is one of the most popular contents on YouTube as well, even for non-Korean YouTubers.

?

2. How do Meok-Bang videos work?

Meok-Bang isn’t just about the food they eat, but it is also about how they eat and what kind of sound they make. It is just like food ASMR, with crunchy and slurping sound! If the hosts are able to perform in the ways that satisfy the viewers, it can attract even more viewers to watch their videos. Interestingly, a lot of famous Meok-Bang hosts got attention as they ate humongous portions of food alone at one sitting. It is a pretty incredible thing to watch!

3. Why did it get popular?

Some say that as a single lifestyle is becoming more common in Korea, a lot of people eat alone at home rather than going to restaurants where a lot of people eat in groups. As their loneliness grow, watching people eat online and interact with them via chats might have become a good replacement for the social interaction they wanted.

Why food though? In Korean culture, “eating food” means way more than just a basic needs for survival. It is used as a way of showing appreciation, a motivator to live a better life, and a tool to catch up with someone meaningful, etc. Also, interaction with food is a really important factor to consider before building a relationship with someone. Therefore, the viewers can feel that they are understood and connected with the hosts and the others, as they watch Meok-Bangs.

Not only the YouTube Meok-Bangs are popular, but satisfying eating scenes from Korean dramas and movies are also what viewers want to watch! Here is the compilation of Meok-Bangs done by Korean actors & actresses during their scenes!

3 Reasons why KwangHee is the hottest Korean Celeb

Ever since KwangHee completed his military duty and came back to the entertainment industry, he has been the most sought after celebrity on Korean variety shows. He is now on various talk shows as a panel, as a guest, and as a host.

Because of his unique and cheerful characteristics, Korean communities have missed him while he was in the military. He comes off as more ?real? and likeable because of his bright friendly, goofy and easy going nature. This is different the more charsimatic persona of other idols.

What made KwangHee this popular? Watch these videos to find out why:.

?

1. He’s the best at being the worst actor, ever.

The scene where he attemped to do Korean dubbing for ‘The Pirates of the Caribbean’ is by far the most loved and re-watched scene of his variety show career. Korean people call this scene “the video we watch whenever we feel down” because it is just so hilarious. Although there isn’t English subtitle for this video, you can totally see why this scene is so popular by listening to his tone and the voice that obviously don’t match with Captain Jack Sparrow’s character!
Also, the light and playful caption style this program chose for his dubbing truly represents how weight-less his acting is!

video=”https://www.youtube.com/embed/8xPFwWb-8F8″
There is another scene of him trying to act like a sad killer who wants to get revenge on his enemy, a person who is very furious and a person who is frightened. As you can see, his acting skills make the judges and teammates laugh so hard!

What makes his acting funnier to watch is that he’s being very serious and sincere while he’s trying to act, but somehow it just shows the opposite!

2. He is light as paper, just like his nickname ‘a paper doll’.

The combination of his skinny frame and his poor athletic abilities make scenes like the ones depicted below even funnier. It?s why they call him ‘a paper doll’.

?

3. He can dance well, but he can’t make it look good.

He debuted as one of the members of male idol group ‘ZE:A’ which is now disbanded. He’s been known as a great dancer, but for some weird reason, his light movement makes his dancing look very funny and not at all serious. However, he seems well suited for the girl groups? songs!

The real reason is ?

All of this make him so entertaining to watch, but his personality is definitely what makes people keep going back to him. Watching him on TV doesn’t feel like watching a typical famous star, but it rather feels like listening to a dear friend complaining about his days. Also, his movement might be known as being ‘light as paper’, but his attitude of always trying his best, and his kind and respectful personality made people fall in love for him even more!

3 Things I miss the most about Korea

Fortunately, I left Korea when I was old enough to remember what it’s like to live there. Unfortunately, I remember them so well that I sometimes compare the lifestyles and cultures between Korea and America. These are the 3 main things that I miss the most from living in Seoul.

1. You don’t need a car to go from A to B in Seoul.

Their transportation system is amazingly well developed, especially within the city of Seoul. There are bus stops and train stations almost everywhere that visitors don’t need to drive cars to get around. In fact, sometimes it might be faster to take public transportations than driving cars through traffic and wasting time looking for parking spots since Seoul is a densely populated city. Oh, and did I mention that Korean train system is #1 in the world? A lot of times they provide wifi too, so you don’t have to worry about riding a long train ride without internet!

2. No need for tips at the restaurants! Tax is already included in receipts.

Korea doesn’t have the tipping culture. Also, the tax is included in the price that people see on the menu. So if the food is listed as ? 6,000 won (approximately $5 in American dollar), you pay ?6,000 won, no surprises. On a side note, Korea has a lot more variety of food choices including street food and convenient stores, and their prices are usually cheaper than America. The cheap and fast delivery option is now becoming more common for a lot of restaurants. There?s no need to leave the house for late night cravings!

3. Everything opens late, or just doesn?t close!

The night in Korea, especially in Seoul, is never dark. The cafes and restaurants that are open for 24 hours are now becoming more popular there. Since there are a lot of late night eaters, students who study for their tests and people who want to have social hours after work. Seoul is still very busy and crowded at night, therefore it makes it a comparably safer place to walk around.

Oh, how I miss thee! Whenever I watch Korean Meok-Bangs on Youtube late at night, I feel nostalgic for Korea, where I could just pick up the phone and order the box of fried chicken, and walk to the convenience store to get a banana milk at 12 am!

Every Fan Must Know These 7 Kpop Concert Ticket Tricks

Have you ever woken up in the middle of the night, panicked over buying tickets to your favorite K-pop group?s concert? Speaking from experience, it can be valuable to prepare ahead of time to make a ticketing ?bloodbath? slightly less gruesome.

For a complete list of groups coming to North America in 2019, check out our list!

Read up on the Concert Announcement

Before tickets go on sale, groups will announce tour dates on their official Twitter pages. Research what kind of tickets you want (e.g., seated or standing) and how much you are willing to spend on these tickets. It is also important to figure out where tickets will be sold.

Concert dates and locations for BLACKPINK?s tour in North America (YG Entertainment).

Everything But the Kitchen Sink

Use every available electronic device. Be certain to make different ticketing accounts for each device, as this will make security checkout exceptionally faster! Likewise, don?t be afraid to recruit family and friends. All is far in love and concert ticketing wars!

Log In Beforehand

You have only five to seven minutes to decide whether or not to purchase a ticket, and because of this, you don?t want to waste time. If you need to sign up or into your account within that five to seven minute window, this lost time could ultimately cost you a ticket.

Scaling the Enemy?s Fortress: Can?t Get Through!

If you can?t purchase tickets on one website or have encountered a ?no more tickets available? message, try another official online vendor.

Don?t F5

You may be stuck in a waiting room. Whatever you do, do not refresh the page unless it crashes or you are met with a ?sold out? message. If you refresh, you will lose your position in the waiting ?line.?

Don?t Listen to Lies!

If the website declares tickets are sold out, don?t believe it for another hour. Truth be told, many people may still be deciding whether or not to ?keep? tickets, or similarly, their five to seven minute time limit may expire. At that point, these tickets will be re-released for someone else to claim.

Woah, Livin? on a Prayer

Dependent on the popularity of the group you?re trying for, the ticketing process may be emotionally and mentally draining. Keep your fingers crossed and celebrate your victories!

From Kpop to Street Food: Essential Stops in Busan

Considering a visit to the largest port in South Korea? Here is a list of must-see places and experiences based on my time living in Busan.

Busan One Asia Festival (BOF)

Are you riding the Hallyu wave? At the end of October, idols perform at the Busan One Asia Festival (BOF) for nine consecutive days. The biggest events are the opening and closing ceremonies, but the festival also includes exhibitions, park concerts and fan meetings. Last year, participating groups included: EXO, Wanna One, SEVENTEEN, NCT 127, and Red Velvet.

Fireworks Festival

During the month of October, spectacular firework and laser displays are released along Gwangalli Beach. Notably, the festival attracts huge crowds. Be prepared to arrive early in order to claim a spot on the beach!

Busan Gamcheon Culture Village

There is no shortage of activities in the famous Gamcheon Culture Village, oftentimes referred to as the ?Machu Picchu? of Korea for its brilliantly colored Lego-like buildings.

Photo Opportunities

As you venture through alleyways decorated with street art alongside houses and businesses, there are plenty of opportunities for pictures!

Hanbok Rentals

Want to traverse the streets of Gamcheon in style? There are many shops around the entrance that rent Hanboks, traditional Korean dress for formal occasions.

Street Food

While visiting, give hotteok, a sweet Korean pancake, a try! There is no shortage of stalls selling these traditional snacks.

Haedong Yonggungsa Temple

Unlike most Buddhist temples in Korea, this structure rests atop the shore line, rather than within the mountains. It is a scared place with intricate architecture and a breathtaking view of the ocean.

Haeundae Beach

Arguably the most famous beach in Busan, the area attracts many tourists. Haeundae is also considered the ?newer? part of Busan, with some of the newest shops and luxury apartment buildings.

Busan Aquarium

Located along the beach, this aquarium takes advantage of the nearby sea water to reduce environmental impact of trucking living water for inhabitants? exhibits. Apparently, the aquarium also contains the longest glass tunnel in Asia.

Shinsegae Department Store

Not far from the beach, Shinsegae Department Store is registered as the largest shopping complex in the world by the Guinness World Records. The complex can quickly become a maze, housing both an ice rink and spa!

Busan International Film Festival (BIFF) Square in Nampo-dong. (Image Courtesy of the Korea Tourism Organization)

Nampo-dong

In its broadest sense, this major commercial and shopping area is lined with shops or department stores, restaurants, cafes, and markets specialized in imported goods and street food.

Busan International Film Festival (BIFF) Square

Named for its annual film festival, BIFF Square is akin to the Hollywood Walk of Fame in the United States. The handprints of famous movie celebrities are imprinted into the walkway, which serves as the main venue for the Busan International Film Festival. Additionally, the square is considered a hot spot for street food.

Bupyeong (Kkangtong) Market

In the dark of the night, food stands local to this historically, so-called ?tin can? market emerge. Among a multitude of street food options, Bupyeong (Kkangtong) Market is also known for its bustling and exotic ?night life? scenery.

Busan Tower

As the symbol of Busan, this tower proudly resides in Yongdusan Park, overlooking the city. It offers a panoramic view of Busan, with window markers to designate specific attractions visible from the tower.

How To Survive “The Pit” at K-pop Concerts

It is concert season for K-pop fans. Did you score a general admission ?pit? ticket to see your favorites perform live, in-person?

No doubt, preparing for the K-pop ?pit? can be overwhelming. We made a short checklist to reference before heading off to your event!

Survival Gear: What to Bring

Before anything, look at the venue?s bag policies. In general, venues will not allow bags of a certain size or with a certain number of pockets. Your best bets are drawstring bags or small cross-body bags.

Do not bring backpacks, like the ones you use at school. These will not be allowed inside. When in doubt: the smaller the bag, the better!

Inside your bag, include these essentials:

  • Ticket: Can you imagine leaving your ticket behind, only to realize seconds before lining up?
  • Phone: You cannot bring professional cameras inside concert halls. Many fansites dedicated to idols will ?sneak? in cameras, however these fansites are oftentimes caught and escorted out by security. To be safe, follow venue policies and use your phone to take pictures or videos.
  • External Charger: From taking pictures to communicating with friends on social media, your phone battery is going to be drained.
  • Earplugs: In order to prevent hearing damage due to music or the piercing screams of fans, you may want to bring earplugs. Earplugs will still allow you to hear the entirety of the concert.
  • Light Stick: If you have a light stick, bring it along in order to ?fully? experience concert culture.
  • Water & Snacks: Typically, venues will not allow outside food or beverages inside concert halls. However, we recommend bringing water and snacks with disposable packaging while waiting in line.
  • Spare Cash: In some instances, venues will not take cards. If you want to buy concessions or merchandise, bring some spare cash.

The Outfit: Style or Comfort

Based on personal experience, comfort always outweighs style. Pick something you feel good in, but when faced with the age-old question: ?platforms for height advantage or sneakers for good support?? ? we always recommend the latter.

Kim Taehyung or ?V? of BTS demonstrating how to jump in high heels. This may not be ideal for a K-pop concert.

Lining Up: How Important is Barricade?

How early should you arrive to line up? If earning a spot extremely close to the stage or the ?barricade? is important to you, then as early as possible.

During the BTS World Tour: Love Yourself, some dedicated fans camped out a week before the show. That said, be aware venues may have restrictions regarding how early fans are permitted to line up on their properties.

It is also important to make friends with the people around you in the general admission line, in advent of bathroom emergencies or food breaks: when your location in line could be sacrificed, left unattended.

If you are at all like me, this process may sound stressful. Keep in mind some fans still prefer the less-competitive ?back? of the pit, where there is also more space to move around.
